Requests to Conduct Research

The 91¶ÌÊÓƵ District School Board supports educational research through its Research Advisory Committee.Ìý All research is reviewed by the Research Advisory Committee which follows the guidelines outlined in KPR Conducting Educational Research in Schools document.Ìý Anyone interested in conducting research in KPR schools is required to review the guidelines thoroughly.

  • Associate Director, Drew McNaughton.
  • 2025-2026 Committee Chair:Ìý Dr. Kingsley Hurlington.

How to Apply

Individuals wishing to conduct research studies with staff, principals, vice-principals or students in KPR schools must submit a formal Application to Conduct Research, which is available .

  1. Secure Ethics Approval: Prior to submitting your application, you must have ethics approval by your university, college or organization’s ethics review board.Ìý A copy of your approval letter is required with your application.
  2. Submit your Application: Complete the official Application to Conduct Research Form and attach all relevant documents.Ìý Members of the committee will receive copies of your submitted material.Ìý
  3. Meet Submission Deadlines: Applications should be received 10 calendar days before a scheduled meeting of the KPR Research Advisory Committee to be considered.Ìý The Committee meets four times per year on October 1, December 1, February 1 and April 1.Ìý Note: If a meeting date falls on a weekend or holiday, it will be held on the next school day.Ìý

Requests and Approvals

The committee prioritizes research that aligns with the Board’s strategic plan and offers benefits to KPR students.Ìý There are often more requests than schools support so not all applications are approved.Ìý Undergraduate studies are not typically accepted for review. Ìý

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:Ìý

  • relevance (to public education; consistent with the Board’s policies, priorities and strategic plan);Ìý

  • protection of staff and students (expectations for staff and student time; disruption to school program; degree of intrusiveness; protection from physical and mental discomfort or harm; free from sensitive or offensive items and activities; free from racist, sexist, religious or other bias; written informed consent; protection of confidentiality of participants);Ìý

  • study design (clear research questions; appropriate instruments; acceptable research procedures and statistical analysis; instructions to participants; appropriate consent in place; privacy and confidentiality);Ìý

  • feedback of results (process for feedback to schools, individuals and Research Advisory Committee); andÌý

  • application meets requirements of all associated organizations (e.g. current ethical review provided from applicant’s institution.Ìý

Committee DecisionÌý

Applicants will be sent a communication from the Research Advisory Committee within two weeks of the meeting. If approved, the committee will support the researcher in finding sites/subjects to conduct the study.Ìý Note that individual school principals will decide whether the study is appropriate at this time for their school, and each participant will have the option to personally participate in the study or not.Ìý External researchers shall not approach participants with an invitation to participate until they have the agreement of the Superintendent(s) and Principal(s) involved. All potential subjects (staff, students and/or parents/caregivers) must provide consent to participate in the external research study.Ìý
