Attendance and Kindergarten Success
Let’s get ready for one of your child’s greatest adventures!
School will be starting soon. Regular attendance is an important foundation for success. Did you know that missing just one or two days of kindergarten every few weeks can make it harder for children to develop reading skills, build relationships and be prepared for first grade?
These strategies can help your child look forward to attending school every day.
ADVENTURE TIME!
Begin a first day of school countdown!
If possible, visit the school to see the building and the school yard.
Visit with neighbours to see who is going to the same school. It’s always fun to have a buddy on the first day.
Make time to talk about school as part of regular home routines.
Respond to any outreach from your child’s school. Ask any  questions that you have!
STORY TIME!
Tell your child positive and fun stories from when you were a student.Â
Talk to your child about what kindergarten will be like for them. Have fun imagining the friends that they will make and the fun things that they will learn about.
Make up silly songs or stories about everyday routines: getting up, getting ready for school, eating breakfast, leaving for the bus or walking to school.
Read to your child each night. Books can address children’s concerns in playful ways and support conversation.
ROUTINE!
Set a standard bedtime and wake up time and consistently practice it, a few weeks in advance.Â
Practice good hygiene (such as hand washing) as an important way to prevent illness/absence.
Let children choose what clothes they’d like to wear the next day. Make sure that they are ready for a potentially busy morning.
Attending every day is critical for their school success.
